Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the course suitable for?

The programme is designed for healthcare professionals working in clinical or mental health settings, such as doctors, psychologists, nurses, pharmacists, and other practitioners involved in patient assessment. Attendees are expected to work within their professional scope and ensure they meet relevant regulatory and indemnity requirements.

Do I need previous experience in ADHD to join the course?

No prior experience in ADHD is required. The course is suitable for healthcare professionals who wish to develop skills in adult ADHD assessment. Participants are expected to work within their own professional scope and comply with any regulatory or indemnity requirements relevant to their role.

Why is this course relevant right now?

Demand for ADHD assessment in the UK continues to grow, with many patients facing long waits for diagnosis. Developing competency in structured assessment allows practitioners to support earlier access to care and contribute to easing service pressures, while gaining valuable specialist expertise.

What makes this training a strong choice?

The course provides a clear, structured pathway through the entire ADHD process — from recognising core features and conducting assessments, through to diagnosis and the fundamentals of report writing. Rather than offering unstructured teaching, the programme follows an organised framework built around recognised diagnostic standards. Delegates also benefit from a professionally produced video demonstrating the DIVA-5 interview, supporting learners to understand the tool in a practical, step-by-step way instead of relying solely on traditional lecture-style teaching.

What will I learn during the course?

Gain a comprehensive, clinically grounded understanding of Adult ADHD, framed within ICD-11 and recognised global diagnostic standards.

The course explores the developmental nature of ADHD, its impact on daily functioning, and how cultural perspectives and healthcare systems shape recognition and management worldwide.

You will learn the neurobiological foundations of ADHD, including key brain networks, neurotransmitter systems, and executive-function mechanisms.

The course outlines the major genetic, environmental, and psychosocial influences that contribute to ADHD across the lifespan.

Practical diagnostic skills are developed through structured teaching on DSM-5 and ICD-11 criteria, alongside hands-on use of validated assessment tools such as ASRS, ACE+ V2, and DIVA-5.

A demonstration of a full DIVA-5 interview models effective communication, rapport-building, and targeted questioning to enhance diagnostic reliability.

We cover essential baseline and physical assessments required for safe prescribing, including when examinations, blood tests, or ECGs are indicated. You will also learn to differentiate ADHD from common psychiatric and neurodevelopmental conditions through clear comparison of overlapping and distinguishing features.

The course includes guidance on producing concise, clinically sound ADHD diagnostic reports that meet professional standards.

How long does the course take?

The training is delivered live over a full single day via Microsoft Teams, including teaching, guided practice, and a final Q&A to consolidate learning.

Will I receive course materials or resources?

Yes. Delegates receive digital learning resources, including pre-course materials developed by our team at ADHD Clinical Academy to help you prepare for the training, as well as slides and reference documents that can be used for ongoing learning after the course.

Is the training based on UK guidance?

Yes. The course aligns with the principles set out in NICE NG87, which states that ADHD diagnosis should be carried out by a “suitably qualified practitioner.” The programme supports clinicians in developing the knowledge and skills required to meet this standard.

Does completing the course mean I can diagnose ADHD independently?

The course provides the skills and structure needed to conduct assessments in line with recognised frameworks. However, practitioners must ensure they meet regulatory requirements (e.g., GMC, NMC, HCPC), work within their professional scope, and hold appropriate indemnity before offering diagnostic services independently. The course itself does not grant a licence to practise.

Can I prescribe ADHD medication after completing the course?

Only clinicians who already hold prescribing rights may prescribe medication. This course focuses on assessment rather than medication initiation or management.

Is certification provided?

Yes. Successful completion results in CPD certification, which can support professional development, revalidation evidence, and insurance applications where required.

Can this support private practice opportunities?

With increasing demand for private ADHD assessments, trained practitioners may be able to integrate assessment services into their current work. Fees in the private sector can be significant, offering flexibility and a potential additional income stream.

Can international practitioners attend?

Yes. International delegates may join the online training. However, every practitioner remains responsible for understanding and complying with the clinical and regulatory requirements in their own country before offering assessments independently.

What technology do I need?

A laptop or desktop computer, a stable internet connection, and access to Microsoft Teams are required. Joining instructions are sent by email prior to the session.

What is your cancellation or refund policy?

We understand that life doesn’t always go as planned. If a delegate is unable to attend, cancellations can be made in line with the published course policy, and full details are provided at the time of booking. Please feel free to contact the team — we will do everything we can to support you and help find a suitable solution.
